Team culture at Octopus Plus: growing together, succeeding together

18 June 20267 min read

A platform is only as strong as the team behind it. Octopus Plus is built by people who spend their days inside the realities of contracts, allotments, transfer plans and reconciliations, and who genuinely enjoy solving those problems together. “Together” isn’t a slogan here; it’s a deliberately protected set of habits that shapes everything from sprint planning to release day.

A workplace built around people

Working here starts from a simple premise: People do their best work where they feel valued and safe. Flexible hours and a hybrid setup aren’t a perk for us, they’re the starting point. What matters more is the tone: Ideas are debated openly, mistakes are treated as data rather than blame, and nobody’s title decides whether their suggestion gets heard.

New joiners are paired with an onboarding buddy for their first months, and every team runs regular one-on-ones that talk about the person, not just the backlog. The result is a team where asking for help is normal and offering it is a reflex.

From my first week, my questions were never treated as an interruption; someone always pulled up a chair next to me. A year in, I catch myself doing the same for the people who joined after me.

Communication that stays short and written

Building the end-to-end operating system of travel means product, engineering, design and field operations have to speak the same language. We keep communication short-cycle and written-first: Decisions are recorded in shared channels rather than hallway conversations, weekly demos put unfinished work in front of everyone early, and cross-team meetings are deliberately brief.

Feedback flows in every direction. Retrospectives close with actions that have an owner and a date, and the quarterly all-hands runs both ways: Leadership answers every question the team asks, unfiltered.

An organization that keeps learning

Travel is a deep domain and technology moves fast, so learning isn’t left to chance. It goes on the calendar:

  • Weekly tech talks: From allotment algorithms to AI-assisted contract reading, anyone can present.
  • Cross-team guilds: Front-end, data and UX guilds share standards and review each other’s work.
  • A personal development budget: For courses, certifications and conference attendance.
  • Pairing with domain experts: The best way to learn travel operations is from the people who have lived it.

I gave my first tech talk three months after joining. Getting to stand in front of the whole company that early tells you how much room this team gives you to grow.

Beyond being colleagues

Some of the best moments happen far from the sprint board. Terrace breakfasts before planning, volleyball on the Antalya coast after work, an annual team camp, and an overly competitive backgammon league in the break room. These are the places that turn colleagues into friends. When a release ships, the whole floor knows about it, because celebrating a win is as established a ritual as the retro that follows.

Leadership that shapes the culture

Culture is defined by what leaders do, not what they write on the wall. Our leads review code, sit in on support escalations, and take their turn presenting at tech talks. Goals are transparent: Anyone can see what every team is working on and why. When priorities change, the reasoning is shared before the tickets are.

As leaders, our job is to remove obstacles and then get out of the way. The team’s craft and curiosity do the rest, and Octopus Plus is the proof.
